Eroded red sandstone rock formations at Jeti-Oguz

DESTINATION GUIDE

Jeti-Oguz

Red sandstone cliffs above a green valley of spruce forest, hot springs and easy walking.

Altitude
2,200 m
From Bishkek
6 h by road
Best season
May to October

Jeti-Oguz means Seven Bulls, after the row of red sandstone fins that stands above the valley mouth. It is the single most photographed rock formation in Kyrgyzstan and, unusually, it lives up to the photographs.

Behind the cliffs the valley opens into spruce forest and summer pasture. A gentle two-hour walk takes you to the Valley of Flowers, and a longer day reaches the meadows below the Teleti pass.

The valley is close enough to Karakol to visit in a morning, which makes it a good acclimatisation day before anything higher.

WHY GO

  • 2Easy forest walking at 2,200 m, ideal for acclimatising
