DESTINATION GUIDE
The oldest city in the country and the start of the Pamir Highway, climbing to passes above 4,200 m.
Osh has been inhabited for three thousand years and still feels like a Silk Road city — the bazaar runs along the river, and Suleiman-Too rises straight out of the middle of town as a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage site.
South of the city the Pamir Highway begins its climb. The road crosses the Taldyk pass at 3,615 m and the Kyzyl-Art at 4,280 m, running through high desert plateau with peaks of the Trans-Alay range to the south.
This is the most demanding region we work in. Altitude is constant, fuel and repairs are scarce, and the weather at 4,000 m does what it likes. It is also the most spectacular drive in Central Asia.
Every itinerary below spends at least one full day in this region.
