DESTINATION GUIDE
A green, low-rise Soviet-planned capital at the foot of the mountains, and the start of nearly every trip.
Bishkek is not why anyone flies to Kyrgyzstan, but it is a better city than its reputation. It was laid out with wide boulevards and irrigation channels under every line of trees, so even in August it stays shaded and walkable.
The Osh bazaar is the honest introduction to the country: felt, spices, horse tack and a wall of dried fruit. Ala-Too square and the surrounding museums give you the political history in an afternoon.
It is also where the mountains start. The Ala-Archa gorge is forty minutes from the city centre and climbs to glaciers at 4,000 m — the standard first-day acclimatisation walk on most of our tours.
Every itinerary below spends at least one full day in this region.
