ABOUT THIS TOUR

Not everyone has a fortnight. This route takes the single best experience in the country — living on a jailoo for two days — and builds the shortest honest trip around it.

You stay with the same two families we have worked with since 2016, on the southern shore where the camps are furthest apart. Days are unstructured on purpose: ride, walk the shoreline, help bring the herd in, or do nothing at all at 3,000 metres.

It is our easiest tour. There is no hard walking, the driving days are four to five hours, and the only real demand is the altitude and the cold after dark.

  • Two full nights in a family yurt camp on the lake shore
  • Horse riding on the open pasture, from an hour to a full day
  • Learning to make kymyz and shyrdak felt with the family
  • Sunrise over the lake from the ridge behind camp
  • Small groups of no more than ten travellers

DAY BY DAY

Open any day to see where you sleep, how far you travel and what the day actually feels like.

GOOD TO KNOW

Sleeping in a yurt

Four to six people share a yurt on felt mattresses under heavy quilts. Toilets are long-drop, a short walk from camp, and there is no shower for two days.

Altitude

Song-Kol is at 3,016 m. The drive gains height slowly enough that most people are fine, but take it easy on the first afternoon.

Season

This route only runs from mid-June to mid-September. Outside those dates the camps are packed away and the pass is closed.
